A Case Study of Yojimbo /

Written by Joshua Allen

“The town can price Sanjuro’s sword, his labor, and every secret he carries. His code becomes visible only when silence costs him more than speech.”

Yojimbo introduces its town by separating a hand from its owner. A dog trots through the street carrying it in its mouth. No one claims the limb. No one stops the animal. The hand has ceased to be part of a person and become one more loose object moving through town.

Then the local constable approaches the newly arrived samurai with a business opportunity. Does he want to make some money as a bodyguard? The going rate is high. The constable takes a commission. He can refer the samurai to either of the town’s rival employers, and he already has an opinion about which side offers the better investment.

The movement from severed hand to employment referral is not incidental. It establishes the economy Sanjuro has entered. Violence is not an interruption of commerce here.

Violence is commerce.

The rival merchants buy men instead of products. The constable sells access. The casket maker prepares inventory in anticipation of demand. A woman can be transferred to settle a debt. Captives are exchanged across the street like negotiable instruments. A bodyguard’s reputation can trigger a bidding war before he has even agreed to fight.

Sanjuro’s great insight is not that the town is corrupt. Everyone who still possesses a conscience already knows that. His insight is that the town has placed a price on more than swords and bodies. It has placed a price on information.

He learns to move the town by controlling who knows what, when they know it, and whether what they know is true. A sentence can stop two armies. A rumor can redirect retaliation. A secret can turn two living prisoners into a pile of money. A false report can move an entire gang from one end of the street to the other.

For most of the film, Sanjuro is the best trader in town. Then he encounters one piece of information he refuses to sell. That refusal is what finally tells us who he is.

The Town Has to Quote a Price

Before Sanjuro reaches the main street, he overhears a family arguing about money. A young man wants to abandon farming and become a gambler. He does not want a long life eating gruel. He wants good food, fine clothes, and enough excitement to die young.

His father’s complaint expands immediately beyond one reckless son. Everyone wants easy money. Gambling promises wealth through a roll of the dice. Ownership has become so unstable that the father says people can no longer tell whose money belongs to whom. Even the sake brewer has begun trading silk in direct competition with the silk merchant. Sanjuro asks for water and listens.

The film has not yet shown him either gang, but it has already explained the conflict in economic terms. The town is not divided by competing principles. It is divided by competing commercial interests that have expanded until every other institution has become subordinate to them. Law enforcement has become a referral service. Political office belongs to whichever merchant currently possesses enough force to claim it. The brothel supplies one faction with money and controlled labor. The silk and sake businesses purchase criminals rather than merchandise.

Gonji, the restaurant keeper, gives Sanjuro the complete market report. There are two bosses, two gangs, and a town unable to function while they compete. The only businessman consistently benefiting is the casket maker, who cannot produce coffins fast enough. The gangs are no longer buying silk. They are buying thugs.

Gonji believes this information should convince Sanjuro to leave. It has the opposite effect. When Gonji asks whether the samurai finally understands how doomed the town is, Sanjuro says that he does. That is why he is staying. He tells Gonji that he can get paid for killing men who deserve to die and, with both factions gone, leave the town a chance to begin again. He will not do it alone. He intends to make the gangs do most of the work themselves.

This matters because it prevents the film from offering a simplistic conversion story later. Sanjuro does not arrive entirely amoral and acquire a conscience after meeting Nui. His moral intention is present almost from the beginning. So is his appetite for profit. He sees no contradiction yet between cleaning out the town, entertaining himself, and being paid by the people he plans to destroy. The elegance of the scheme is that justice, pleasure, and income appear capable of moving in the same direction.

Nui will not create his code. She will force that code to become expensive.

The Sword Has to Set the Rate

Sanjuro initially sells the one commodity everyone can see: his sword. He approaches Seibei and offers to become his bodyguard. Before negotiating, he promises to demonstrate what he is worth.

He returns to the street, insults several of Ushitora’s men, listens as they advertise their crimes and tattoos, and asks whether they will mind if he kills them. The confrontation is over almost as soon as the sword leaves its sheath.

Sanjuro does not pause over the bodies. He calls to the casket maker: “Two coffins.” Then, correcting himself after counting the dead: “Three.” The line converts the killing into an invoice. The bodies prove the product.

Sanjuro returns to Seibei and invites an offer. Seibei begins at three ryo. Sanjuro threatens to sell his services to Ushitora. The bid rises through four, five, six, ten, twenty, twenty-five and finally fifty, with half paid in advance plus room and board.

The first sword sequence is therefore not primarily a fight. It is a market demonstration. The town has heard men claim to be dangerous. Sanjuro makes danger visible, brief, and measurable. His skill creates a reputation; the reputation establishes scarcity; scarcity produces competition between buyers.

Akira Kurosawa later rejected the idea that Yojimbo succeeded simply because audiences enjoyed its sword fighting. The real source of its appeal, he argued, was the hero and the reason behind his actions: “He is a real hero, he has a real reason for fighting.” That distinction is embedded in the film’s form.

The swordplay is extraordinarily fast. Alexander Sesonske’s Criterion essay notes that much of the human violence either occurs beyond the frame or ends quickly enough to be missed in a blink. What remains in the audience’s memory is not an extended display of technique but Sanjuro’s physical certainty before and after it—the toothpick, the shoulder hitch, the unhurried stride, the body that never appears to require the theatrical effort surrounding it.

Mifune’s performance makes the sales pitch credible before the blade confirms it. John Sayles has compared Mifune to physical actors like Steve McQueen — performers whose lines could be cut without weakening the character, because their bodies did that work instead — and called Mifune “the same kind of actor.” The film surrounds him with men who boast, crowd doorways, flash tattoos, and gather courage from being observed by one another. Mifune scratches, slouches, watches and waits. The less he performs toughness, the more valuable the possibility of his violence becomes.

Tatsuya Nakadai remembered Mifune bringing such force even to test footage that he sometimes damaged the sets. Nakadai also recalled the difficulty of performing amid the production’s distant telephoto setups and dense artificial dust, never knowing whether a movement was being captured in a wide composition or an unforgiving close-up. The dust itself was made from roasted soybean flour, sand and salt so it would remain usable during the winter shoot.

Those production conditions matter because Yojimbo makes physical presence part of its economy. Sanjuro can raise his price because his body looks capable before anyone understands his plan. But he also learns almost immediately that the sword is not the most efficient force available.

The News Has to Stop the Fight

Sanjuro’s first plan appears to work. He accepts Seibei’s advance, then overhears Seibei and Orin discussing whether they should kill him after the battle and recover the rest of their money. Once again, information is more valuable than the visible transaction. Sanjuro returns the twenty-five ryo, refuses to lead the attack, and announces his availability to Ushitora instead.

Both gangs advance into the street. Neither wants to close the distance. Men surge forward when watched by their leaders and recoil when the opposing line answers. Sanjuro climbs the guard tower and observes from above, having converted his refusal into a confrontation he expects the factions to finish themselves.

Then a horseman enters. An inspector from Edo is coming. The battle disappears. No sword can accomplish what the announcement does in seconds. Both gangs retreat. Wanted men are hidden. Doors are opened. Businesses are ordered to appear normal. Even the dogs must stop fighting.

A piece of information reblocks the entire town.

That is the first complete demonstration of the film’s deeper action grammar. The news does not merely alter what characters think. It determines where their bodies move. One shouted sentence empties the street faster than Sanjuro’s reputation filled it. It sends criminals indoors. It turns closed businesses into false evidence of civic peace. It changes two approaching armies into rival groups performing respectability for an authority figure who has not yet arrived.

Sanjuro planned to make the factions destroy one another through physical pressure. The inspector’s approach teaches him that information can move them farther, faster, and with less risk.

The gangs understand the same principle. Ushitora strongly implies that he arranged the murder of a magistrate in another town precisely because news of it will pull the inspector away; he immediately complains that the inspector’s continued presence is costing him money. Information has a production cost, an anticipated arrival time, and a measurable economic effect.

From this point forward, Sanjuro begins trading less in violence than in access to knowledge. The sword establishes his exchange rate. Information becomes the commodity he can sell repeatedly.

The Secret Has to Move the Body

Sanjuro finds two of the men responsible for the magistrate’s murder. They were paid almost nothing—two silver pieces. He tells them they accepted a poor deal, but their information will still be useful to him. They are a gold mine. He can blackmail Ushitora or sell the men to Seibei.

The wording removes any ambiguity from the mechanism. Information is wealth. The men possess value not because of who they are but because of what their existence proves. Their bodies are evidence that can be transferred to a buyer.

Sanjuro captures them and offers them to Seibei as a bargain. Seibei can deliver the assassins to the inspector and destroy Ushitora’s position. Money changes hands. The prisoners are locked inside a storehouse.

Sanjuro then goes to Ushitora and sells him the location of the same men. “You don’t get information like this for free,” he says. Ushitora tells him to take as much money as he wants.

One piece of knowledge has now generated value more than once. Sanjuro profits first from acquiring the men, then from transferring them, then from revealing where the new owner has stored them. The information does not depreciate when sold. It becomes more valuable because each sale changes the circumstances surrounding it.

Unosuke responds by capturing Seibei’s son, Yoichiro. He proposes an exchange: the son for the assassins. Each side will send unarmed men into the street and trade one set of bodies for another. Sanjuro is impressed.

Later, when Gonji asks whether Sanjuro wrote this latest drama, he answers that he wrote half. Unosuke rewrote the other half.

The line is often useful for describing Sanjuro as a director arranging the town’s spectacle. But the metaphor becomes more precise when connected to information. Sanjuro is writing through distribution. Who receives the assassins? Who knows where they are? Who understands what their capture can prove? Who knows that Yoichiro has become the counteroffer? Every new fact creates another scene because it moves another group of bodies into position.

This is why Kurosawa’s spatial design matters so much. MoMA singles out Kazuo Miyagawa and Takao Saito’s use of the spare main-street set through widescreen composition and deep focus. The street is not merely picturesque emptiness. It is a visible exchange floor on which information becomes blocking. A hostage is pulled from one doorway. A counter-hostage appears at the other end. Groups cross toward the guard tower. Observers remain behind bars and shutters. Sanjuro watches from above.

The frame allows the audience to understand not merely who possesses whom, but how a change in knowledge reorganizes the whole town. The action occurs before the swords move.

The Body Has to Enter the Ledger

The opening hand is not an isolated shock. It is the first image in a continuing grammar that turns people into inventory.

Gonji explains that the gangs are buying thugs instead of silk. The constable quotes the market rate for bodyguards. Seibei calculates whether paying Sanjuro fifty ryo is more expensive than murdering him after the battle and reclaiming the investment. Orin locks the brothel workers indoors because the business has paid too much for them to escape during the fighting. The captured assassins are called a purchase. Yoichiro becomes exchange value. Nui is introduced during the hostage confrontation as another human asset one faction can withhold from the other.

Later, Gonji explains the transaction that placed her there. Kohei lost while gambling. Ushitora took his house and wife. Tokuemon wanted Nui, so Ushitora used both her body and the house as inducements to draw the sake merchant onto his side. Kohei now lives beside the home that used to be his and watches another man control the woman he was forced to surrender.

Nui is not merely imprisoned. She has been used to settle one obligation and secure another. Her body has moved through the town according to the same logic governing silk, sake, territory and hired force.

The film repeatedly stages that logic through barriers. Bodies appear behind bars. The brothel workers are pushed inside and locked away. The assassins are placed in a warehouse. Hostages are dragged into the street. Nui is displayed across the distance between the rival factions. Sanjuro himself is constantly being invited to enter one building or another and belong temporarily to whoever has paid the latest price.

The town reduces identity to current possession.

That is also why the violence feels materially different from the polished swordplay the film is satirizing. Kurosawa wanted the cut itself to carry physical consequence. Teruyo Nogami later recalled sound-effects experimentation involving cuts of meat and finally a whole chicken reinforced with chopsticks to create the audible resistance of flesh and bone. The effect is not simply to make killing more exciting. It makes the body harder to abstract. The gangs may discuss men as expenses, purchases and inventory, but the soundtrack keeps reminding the audience that every item in that ledger contains flesh.

Sanjuro is not morally outside this system. He uses its language. He calls the assassins a gold mine. He sells them. He encourages Seibei to protect his purchase. He uses Yoichiro’s capture as part of a spectacle he finds amusing. He is better than the gang bosses at understanding the town because he is willing to admit how it works. That does not yet mean he has escaped its logic.

The Gift Has to Make Him Poorer

Sanjuro’s response to Nui is not a sudden discovery that suffering exists. He entered the town intending to destroy both gangs. What changes is the relationship between his moral objective and his personal profit.

Until Nui, almost every principled action also serves his strategy. Killing the first three men raises his price. Rejecting Seibei protects him from assassination. Selling the magistrate’s killers creates money and destabilizes Ushitora. Encouraging the hostage exchange deepens the conflict. His desired outcome and his self-interest remain compatible.

Then Gonji explains that Nui cannot even see her child. Sanjuro’s response is brief: men like that make him sick.

He accepts Ushitora’s offer to become his bodyguard for thirty ryo. Before drinking to the partnership, he asks whether the woman is secure. He convinces Ushitora that her existing guards are insufficient and maneuvers himself into position to inspect them.

Then he turns the transaction inside out. He sends Inokichi away with a false report. He kills the guards. He releases Nui. When Kohei and Kenbo arrive, Sanjuro gives the family thirty ryo—the same amount he has just taken from Ushitora—and orders them to run.

This is not the first evidence that Sanjuro possesses a code. It is the first transaction whose loss is the point. He does not merely waive a fee. He spends money, reputation, safety and informational control to remove a human being from circulation. He has been paid to protect Ushitora’s property. Instead, he uses the payment to help the supposed property escape.

Only now does the title Yojimbo acquire its most meaningful irony. Sanjuro becomes a bodyguard in the moral sense precisely when he stops guarding the body his employer believes he owns.

He destroys the building to fabricate evidence of a larger attack and tells Ushitora that Seibei’s men took Nui. The lie sends both factions back into open war. Silk burns. Sake pours into the street. The commercial rivalry consumes the commodities that gave the merchants their identities.

The rescue is humane. Its strategy is not clean. Sanjuro saves the family by redirecting the town’s violence toward itself, accelerating destruction he had already intended to provoke. The film does not pretend that his method becomes gentle merely because the purpose has become unmistakably decent.

His action still uses people as pieces. It simply reveals that there are people he will no longer allow the town to own.

The Gift Has to Leave a Receipt

Sanjuro wants the family to disappear. Instead, they thank him. He becomes furious when they bow and cry. He insults them, threatens them, and orders them never to return.

Part of the reaction is emotional evasion. Gratitude names a kindness Sanjuro prefers to conceal beneath contempt. But gratitude is also operationally dangerous.

The family later sends a written thank-you note. Gonji needles him that it is probably only a long, tedious thank-you note, but tells him Kohei risked his life to deliver it. Sanjuro still refuses to read it, retreating behind the bottle: he is busy drinking.

The note is a receipt for a transaction that was supposed to leave none. Every commercial exchange in the town produces evidence—money, ownership, custody, territory, a body behind a door. Sanjuro’s rescue is designed to remove Nui from that system without creating a new claim over her. The note records the transfer anyway. It identifies the giver, the beneficiaries, and the fact that an unpriced act occurred.

Unosuke finds it. By then he has already received another piece of information: a witness saw Nui crossing the ridge with Kohei and their child on the morning after the guards were supposedly killed by Seibei’s men.

Unosuke begins checking the story. Did Inokichi see the six bodies himself? No. Sanjuro told him they were dead. The difference between seeing and being told collapses the entire construction.

This makes Unosuke more dangerous than the pistol alone can explain. Every other buyer in town accepts information according to whether it confirms what he already wants. Seibei wants evidence against Ushitora. Ushitora wants his assassins recovered. Both gangs want to believe the other is responsible for every new injury. Unosuke asks for provenance. Who saw it? When? What was directly observed? Which conclusion depends entirely upon Sanjuro’s report? He is the first customer who stops admiring the product long enough to inspect it.

Sanjuro’s monopoly ends the moment someone audits the information.

The Buyer Has to Ask for Proof

Unosuke is usually discussed as the gun entering the world of the sword. The reading is justified. His pistol changes the balance of force, grants him distance, and introduces a foreign technology Sanjuro cannot simply ignore.

But the weapon is only half of what makes him the correct adversary. He is also the one opponent who understands that Sanjuro manufactures stories — and subjects those stories to an audit.

Earlier, when Sanjuro says he wrote half the town’s new drama, Unosuke supplies the other half by taking Yoichiro hostage. Later, he follows a witness statement backward through Sanjuro’s deception. He separates direct observation from rumor. He notices that the method of the six killings corresponds to the only swordsman in town capable of producing them. He finds the written evidence Sanjuro refused to destroy.

His intelligence is a form of counter-trading. He does not merely possess more force. He decreases the market value of Sanjuro’s information by proving it may be counterfeit.

Nakadai’s performance makes that threat visually distinct from the broad, blustering men surrounding him. John Sayles describes Unosuke’s polished appearance as a direct counterpoint to Mifune’s rough, physical Sanjuro. The pistol completes the contrast: beauty, modernity and theatrical confidence wrapped around someone observant enough to change the equation.

Nakadai recalled that drawing the pistol from inside his kimono placed the weapon directly in front of his face; the gunpowder charge made him blink reflexively, prompting Kurosawa to yell that he was shooting a close-up. A separate problem came from the artificial dust, which stung badly enough that closing the eyes was the natural response; Kurosawa nevertheless insisted that the actors keep them open.

The result is a villain whose scrutiny becomes part of the danger. Unosuke looks. He checks. He reconstructs. The pistol lets him punish Sanjuro once the information trail leads to the truth.

The Information Has to Stop Being for Sale

Sanjuro is captured and beaten. The reversal is not proof that he was never a dominant swordsman. The film has already established the opposite. He loses because his informational cover fails, the gun controls the immediate space, and the gang can overwhelm an unprepared man once his assumed identity collapses.

Without his sword, one of the guards says, Sanjuro is nothing. The gang has misunderstood him in the same way it misunderstands every other form of value.

The sword made Sanjuro expensive. It did not make him who he is.

Tokuemon offers another transaction: tell them where Nui has gone and they will allow him to live. The terms are direct—information in exchange for his body.

Sanjuro refuses. He will not talk.

This is the point at which the film’s economic language becomes character revelation. Until now, Sanjuro has sold almost everything he knows. He has sold truth. He has sold lies. He has sold people’s locations. He has sold the existence of witnesses. He has sold information to one side after extracting value from the same information on the other.

The film does not transform him into an honest man here. He will continue lying, withholding and manipulating after he escapes. The change is narrower and more meaningful. There is now something he will not put on the market. Nui’s location has practical value. It can buy his life. He decides that the price is irrelevant.

Kurosawa’s claim that the film’s appeal lies in the hero’s reason for fighting rather than the fighting itself becomes clearest here. Sanjuro’s code is not ultimately proved by what he kills.

It is proved by what he refuses to sell.

The Cost Has to Become His Body

Once Sanjuro removes Nui from the town’s ledger, his own body enters it. The guards are told not to kill him because he still possesses valuable information.

During the beating, Kannuki warns him not to get blood on the storage chest. The furniture is treated as an asset worth protecting; Sanjuro is a damaged container whose remaining value depends upon whether the gang can extract its contents.

He escapes by crawling inside the chest. The information traders have become so convinced that a body without a sword is useless that they fail to imagine the body itself becoming concealment. Sanjuro passes from human threat to hidden cargo.

He reaches Gonji and immediately produces another false report: tell the gang he went to Seibei’s. Even after refusing to sell Nui, he has not rejected deception. He has established its boundary. A lie that protects the vulnerable remains available. A truth that returns a woman to captivity does not.

When the gang begins searching, Sanjuro asks Gonji to buy a coffin. Gonji initially thinks the beaten man has surrendered to death. Sanjuro corrects him. He is not dying yet. There are still people he intends to kill.

The casket maker’s merchandise becomes an escape vehicle. Sanjuro is placed inside and carried through the town as a corpse. He even orders Gonji to set the coffin down so he can watch Ushitora’s men burn Seibei’s compound and finish the destruction he began.

The image completes the body-as-goods motif by reversing it. Early in the film, after Sanjuro enters town, a dog carries part of a dead body without understanding what it possesses. Now living men carry a living body because they misunderstand what the coffin contains. Sanjuro survives by allowing the town to assign him the wrong market category.

Dead.

Gonji then manipulates Inokichi into helping carry the coffin to the cemetery. He questions the thug’s courage, mentions ghosts, and lets Inokichi’s need to defend his reputation move Sanjuro’s body out of danger.

Information still moves bodies. It now moves one toward life.

The Market Has to Exceed Its Capacity

The casket maker appears to be the town’s most reliable capitalist. As long as the gangs create bodies, he creates coffins. Early in the film, he cannot work quickly enough. He even invests in lumber when renewed conflict appears likely.

Then the violence becomes too extensive. When Hansuke assumes business must be booming, the casket maker corrects him. Once the fighting becomes this bad, no one bothers with coffins.

The town has exceeded even its death industry’s capacity to convert destruction into orderly commerce. Bodies are no longer customers. They are debris.

This is the real cost of Sanjuro’s method. He intends to create a fresh start by turning the gangs against one another, but the process is not surgical. Buildings burn. Workers are displaced. Bodies remain unburied. The commercial center of the town is physically destroyed.

Sanjuro’s information strategy is more efficient than direct combat because it scales violence without requiring his presence. That efficiency is also what makes it dangerous. A false report can kill people he never sees. A rumor has no obligation to stop after accomplishing the purpose for which it was released.

The film’s satisfaction comes from watching corrupt organizations consume themselves, but Yojimbo does not show a clean town waiting beneath them. It shows ruins.

Sanjuro can end the market. He cannot restore everything it has destroyed.

The Sword Has to Become the Last Currency

The final movement begins with another piece of information. Gonji has been caught while bringing Sanjuro food and medicine. The supplies revealed the existence of someone in hiding.

Sanjuro no longer has a profitable secret to sell. His deception has been exposed. The rival gangs have nearly finished destroying one another. Ushitora’s surviving men know who he is. Gonji’s location is known. The street contains no buyer whose offer matters.

The casket maker gives Sanjuro a dead man’s sword. Only now does the film arrive at the kind of showdown its reputation promises.

Sanjuro enters openly. No false employer. No competing bid. No concealed allegiance. No rumor that can move the remaining bodies out of his path.

Unosuke warns him not to approach. The gun is neutralized before the sword finishes the street. The violence passes with the speed Sesonske identifies throughout the film: blocking, distance, reputation and preparation have done most of the dramatic work before the blade begins moving.

This is where the two governing ideas finally converge. Information has moved the action for most of the film because it is cheaper than violence. It can redirect a gang without fighting every member. It can create hostages, bids, retreats and retaliations. It allows Sanjuro to control the town while sitting inside Gonji’s restaurant. But information only works while somebody remains willing to purchase the story. At the end, the market has run out. The sword becomes the last currency because every cheaper instrument has been exhausted.

Even here, the film defines Sanjuro by what he does not kill. The farmer’s son from the opening has joined the gang. Sanjuro spares him and sends him home to his mother, ordering him to live a long life eating gruel. The line returns the young man to the life he rejected at the beginning. Good food, fine clothes and an early death were the promises of easy money. Sanjuro has now shown him the actual price.

Unosuke, dying, asks for his pistol. Without it, he feels naked. Sanjuro returns the weapon and waits while Unosuke tries to turn it on him one last time. The gun fires uselessly into the ground.

The gesture is not naïveté. Sanjuro understands both the weapon and the man holding it. He grants Unosuke the identity the dying man believes he needs and accepts the final risk without pretending the gun has become harmless.

Then the two merchants complete the feud themselves. No hired thug. No bodyguard. No strategic rumor. The commercial conflict reduces to the men whose appetites produced it.

The town becomes quiet. Sanjuro cuts Gonji free and leaves.

The Story Has to Enter Another Market

The afterlife of Yojimbo is often discussed as a cycle of influence between Japanese cinema, American noir, the Western, and the Italian Western. That history is real and should not be simplified into a story of untouched originality.

Kurosawa openly worked with genre grammar that crossed borders. Alexander Sesonske famously describes Yojimbo’s cinematic genealogy through Shane and Scarface. John Sayles connects its outsider and broken social order to Dashiell Hammett and the American tradition of individual figures operating through personal codes after older institutions have failed.

Influence, however, is not the same transaction as an unlicensed remake. Sergio Leone’s A Fistful of Dollars transported Yojimbo’s core arrangement into a Western town: the outsider entering a conflict between rival factions, selling himself across both sides, manipulating their information, helping a captive woman escape, suffering retaliation, and returning for a final confrontation.

Those are critical observations made by comparing the films. They should not be misrepresented as a list of formal findings issued by a court.

The legal history is clearer at the level of outcome. The Film Foundation’s restoration account states that the copyright dispute delayed the film’s American release and resulted in Kurosawa receiving fifteen percent of worldwide receipts plus exclusive distribution rights in certain Far Eastern territories. It also reports that he ultimately made more from Leone’s film than from Yojimbo.

The irony fits Yojimbo almost too neatly. A film about the price of information became valuable enough for its narrative structure to be carried into another market without authorization. The subsequent dispute assigned that structure a financial value after the transfer had already occurred.

But the most useful conclusion is not that Yojimbo owned the idea of an outsider playing two sides against one another. The concept has older literary and theatrical relatives. What Leone recognized was the value of Kurosawa’s particular arrangement: violence establishing the outsider’s price, information becoming more valuable than violence, a captive family revealing the limit of the mercenary role, the hero losing control when his deception is audited, the body hidden as cargo, the final return after the market for manipulation has collapsed.

The story traveled because its mechanism was portable. The legal resolution demonstrated that portability was not the same as disposability.

The Bodyguard Has to Leave Unpaid

The town first announces itself to Sanjuro with a piece of a person moving through the street as if it belongs to no one. It ends with Sanjuro restoring movement to people the town has tried to own.

He returns Nui to her husband and child. He returns the farmer’s son to his parents. He cuts Gonji loose. Then he walks away.

There is no final employer waiting to settle the account. No merchant claims his service. No constable collects a commission. No faction survives to purchase the bodyguard.

The film has not revealed that Sanjuro was secretly uninterested in money. He enjoys bargaining too much for that reading. Nor has it purified him into a conventional moral hero. He lies, manipulates, kills and deliberately accelerates the destruction of the town.

What changes is the limit of the transaction. At first, Sanjuro believes he can sell his sword, his allegiance and every useful fact while privately steering the profits toward a decent end. Nui proves that a code that never costs anything is only an efficient preference.

The thank-you note exposes him. Unosuke’s audit captures him. The gang offers to buy the family’s location with his life.

Sanjuro refuses.

That is the act the town cannot price.

The sword is what makes him expensive.

The information is what makes him powerful.

The silence is what makes him a hero.

A Note on Sourcing: Akira Kurosawa’s account of the film’s appeal residing in the hero’s motive rather than its swordplay — that he “is a real hero” with “a real reason for fighting” — is drawn from Kurosawa interviewed by Donald Richie, Sight and Sound, Autumn 1964.

Alexander Sesonske’s Criterion essay “Yojimbo: West Meets East” (originally published in Criterion’s 2006 edition of the film; republished to Criterion’s Current, March 23, 2010) supports the description of the film’s violence as largely occurring offscreen or too quickly to register; the observation that the film’s single most sustained scene of destruction has no human victims; the description of the film’s genealogy as “Shane out of Scarface”; and the account of Mifune’s performance as centered on the toothpick, the shoulder hitch, and the swordsman’s walk.

The description of Kazuo Miyagawa and Takao Saito’s use of the film’s spare main-street set through widescreen composition, wide-angle lenses, and deep focus is drawn from MoMA’s own program note for its Kazuo Miyagawa retrospective.

John Sayles’s reading of the film’s outsider as descending from Dashiell Hammett’s Red Harvest, and his description of the film’s tension as existentialism confronting consumerism, profit, and greed after the collapse of an older social order, are drawn from John Sayles interviewed by Leslie Felperin, Sight and Sound, September 1996. That interview also supports Sayles’s comparison of Mifune to physical actors such as Steve McQueen — performers whose dialogue could be cut without weakening the character because their bodies carried the performance instead — and his description of Unosuke’s polished appearance as a direct counterpoint to Mifune’s rough, physical Sanjuro.

Tatsuya Nakadai’s own recollections of the production — Mifune’s full-effort test shoots damaging sets and pushing the production toward filming largely without rehearsal; the difficulty of performing under distant telephoto setups without knowing whether a movement was framed wide or in close-up; the pistol’s placement directly in front of his face when drawn from his kimono, and his reflexive blinking at the gunpowder charge; and the artificial dust’s composition of roasted soybean flour, sand, and salt, with the salt included specifically to keep the mixture from frosting during the winter shoot — are drawn from Nakadai Tatsuya on the Golden Age of Japanese Film: Chapter Two, an English translation of Nakadai’s own published recollections, translated by Henkka and hosted at kumomi.org.

The account of the sword-through-flesh sound effect — sound mixer Ichiro Minawa testing cuts of pork and beef before finding them too soft, and arriving at a whole chicken reinforced with chopsticks — is drawn from Teruyo Nogami, Kurosawa’s script supervisor, as quoted in Stuart Galbraith IV’s The Emperor and the Wolf: The Lives and Films of Akira Kurosawa and Toshiro Mifune (Faber & Faber, 2002, pp. 302–303), by way of David Toop’s “Chickens Come Home to Roost,” Senses of Cinema, July 2019.

The account of the Toho/Jolly Film legal dispute over A Fistful of Dollars — the settlement’s terms, including Kurosawa’s fifteen percent of worldwide receipts and distribution rights across parts of the Far East, and the claim that the settlement ultimately paid him more than Yojimbo itself had — is drawn from The Film Foundation’s own account, “Out of the Vaults: A Fistful of Dollars, 1964,” which states that Kurosawa “prevailed in the lawsuit” and was awarded those terms. The comparison of the two films’ structural arrangement is Atlantis’s own critical observation and should not be read as a legal finding. No court record establishing scene-by-scene findings was located, so this essay relies only on the publicly reported financial outcome of the copyright dispute.

Nakadai Tatsuya on the Golden Age of Japanese Film: Chapter Two に基づく。

The Emperor and the Wolf: The Lives and Films of Akira Kurosawa and Toshiro Mifune(Faber & Faber、2002年、302–303頁)が引用し、さらにデヴィッド・トゥープの「Chickens Come Home to Roost」(Senses of Cinema、2019年7月)が紹介したものに基づく。
